Event Details

Directed by Maxim Pozdorovkin

Official Selection: Toronto Film Festival

Just when you thought we’d figured this whole robot thing out and they were there to serve us and make our lives infinitely easy, along comes this film that examines the nature of machine learning and the inherent dangers of revelling in our genius as humans without thought.

The premise of this startling film is legendary science fiction writer Isaac Asimov’s three guidelines for machines: Law One: “A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.” Law Two: “A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. Law Three: “A robot must protect its own existence, as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.”

Pozdorovkin visits various factories where robots have been responsible for human deaths, Japanese hotels staffed only by robots and speaks to inventors producing robots in their own likeness and in so doing paints a picture of one of many possible but scary futures.
